In 1982 I had only recently begun my career as an architectural photographer when Thomas Ingalls, graphic designer and art director for Archetype Magazine, hired me to document a landmark architectural exhibit, The Presence of the Past, which was traveling to San Francisco following its debut at the 1980 Venice Biennale. This was an extraordinary commission for me at a critical time in my nascent career. The Spring 1982 issue of Archetype Magazine was devoted to the exhibit and featured my photographs throughout.
Architectural historian Hannah Lise Simonson has recently created a website about the exhibit, which is now regarded as one of the most important architectural exhibits of the 20th Century. You can explore the exhibit and my photographs of it, on her website here: The Presence of the Past 1982
