On May 30, 2025, an exhibition of my work from the project Outer Sunset 1977-1978 had an opening reception and talk at Black Bird Books and The Last Straw Gallery in the 4500 block of Irving Street in San Francisco’s Outer Sunset neighborhood. The exhibit was organized by Nora Lalle, publisher of Pamplemousse Magazine, which published the project as a cover feature in the Spring 2025 issue of her magazine. Nicole Meldahl, director of Western Neighborhoods Project, moderated an interview with Nora and myself at Black Bird. We had a lively SRO crowd of folks from the neighborhood and beyond. This was a memorable event for me in many ways. The event was held in the same block of Irving Street where the Surf Theatre screened foreign and underground films decades ago when I began this project. The neighborhood has changed in many ways since the 70s and it was great to witness that change in the faces of the people who now live there and to see how much they appreciate their hood with all its quirks, remoteness, and alt charm. It was a typical San Francisco crowd where the old guard mingled with the avant garde. It was real. The exhibit continues through July 7, 2025.
Sam Mondros wrote a great review of the project in SF Standard. Here’s a link:
