People, Porches, and Places Exhibit

People, Porches, and Places, an exhibit curated by Kathe Hambrick, director of the River Road African-American Museum, opened in New Roads at the Poydras Center on April 24, 2022. Concurrent with the exhibit opening was a dedication ceremony for the newly installed Louisiana Historical Marker for the Miss Jane Pittman Oak nearby in Lakeland, Louisiana. The oak was an inspiration to noted Louisiana author Ernest J. Gaines, which figured in his novel, The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman. Gaines grew up on River Lake Plantation in Oscar nearby and would pass the tree when he walked to the store. People, Porches, and Places features my work from the book New Roads and Old Rivers: Louisiana’s Historic Pointe Coupee Parish. The exhibit will be on permanent display on the 3rd floor exhibit space at Poydras Center; 500 West Main Street; New Roads, LA, 70760.
